
Will Smith is taking a step back in the aftermath of his Oscars outburst.
The Men in Black star resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which hosts the Oscars, less than a week after he slapped presenter Chris Rock onstage during the ceremony, according to a statement obtained by multiple outlets.
Smith stated in the statement that “the list of people I have hurt is extensive and includes Chris and his family as well as many of my dearest friends and loved ones.” Smith stated that he had betrayed Academy trust. Other nominees and winners were denied the opportunity to be recognized for their exceptional work. I am heartbroken.”
He claimed he’d accept all possible consequences.
During the March 27 show, Rock made a joke about his wife, Jada pinkett Smith, leading Smith to shout, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f–king mouth.” Smith was nominated for an Oscar. King RichardAbout half an hour later, Rock apologized and retracted his remarks.
