He said, “We weren’t interested in recreating images exactly, but we wanted to explore how photographer and subject relate.” Both the friendship and artistic process, and how art may imitate life and vice versa.
According to Steven, when he showed Madonna Bert’s photos, “She was really taken by the incandescent fragility of Marilyn at that moment in her life.”
He explained that they had chosen to find a hotel room and capture the “liaison between a star & the camera”, the mystery and magic of the creative collaboration. “We hope we have given justice to the great work done by Bert Stern, Marilyn Monroe.”
