Marijuana at Work

In the modern era, many aspects of society have seen radical change. Amongst these changes are the perception and legislation around marijuana. Since 2012, when marijuana was legalized in Washington, it has swept across the nation and become fully legal in 25 states. While it is already legal for over half of the US population, there are still some states dragging their feet to catch up. Idaho, for example, has yet to either legalize or decriminalize marijuana in any form. Similarly, in Kansas, no pro-marijuana legislation has been passed despite the introduction of legalization, decriminalization, and exemptions for military veterans.

Because of the sweeping wave of its legalization, marijuana has also become a more prevalent topic at the workplace. From the employee’s point of view, 1 in every 10 US employees admits to marijuana usage. However, 73% of them say that being high improves their performance at the workplace. From the employer’s point of view, cracking down on marijuana is an uphill battle. Several states such as Nevada, New York, and Washington, D.C. have restricted pre-screening for marijuana. Moreover, there has been a 45% year-over-year growth of drug tests classified as ‘invalid’. Ultimately, whether you are an employee or employer, marijuana is likely to become a larger part of your environment for the near future.
