Yet another award show, yet another mistake.

During the In Memoriam tribute of the 2022 Grammys dedicated to the artists lost in the past year, Louis Vuitton artistic director and Off-White CEO Virgil Abloh—who died of cancer in 2021 at age 41—was labeled a “Hip Hop Fashion Designer.” The backlash quickly spread via Twitter.

“Virgil Abloh, the damn artistic director at Louis Vuitton menswear, founded a fashion house in Milan and was called the “Artistic Director” of the brand. Watching the Throne podcast posted. They try to tie him to music so that he can explain it to clueless people. However, respect is much more important that catering to clueless people.

Although Abloh did work with hip hop artists such as Kanye WestCriticisms of the Hip Hop Fashion Designer designation pointed out that it didn’t capture his career. Abloh also worked for Louis Vuitton as well as Italian luxury brand Off-White. The Throne is on the horizon album.
