Comedian Jerrod CarmichaelHas announced that he is gay.

The 34-year-old stand-up comes out during his special Jerrod Carmichael, RothanielThe premiere of ‘The Killing,’ aired on HBO April 1.

Directed by Bo BurnhamCarmichael discusses his father’s infidelity, which he uses as an opportunity to discuss his own sexuality. Once the facts about his father were made known, the comedian says he felt burdened.

“I was left alone feeling like a liar because I had a secret—one that I kept from my mother and my father, my family, my friends and you, all of you,” he told the audience, “and the secret is that I’m gay.”

As Carmichael was brutally open about his life, the crowd applauded Carmichael’s announcement at New York City’s Blue Note Jazz Club.

His ego says that he wants to rebel against it. “I have rebelled against it all my life. It was a dream of mine that I would come out. It was not something I thought I would ever do. Many times I believed I would prefer to die rather than facing the truth, and to tell it to others. Because it can change people’s perceptions about me. That is something I cannot control. “I come from a family that expects you to be a man regardless of what it means.”
