There is grave danger when there are great waves. 

Oahu, Hawaii isn’t just known for hula dancing, fresh pineapple and palm trees—it’s also known for its top tier surfing. Here’s an exclusive look at Apple TV+’s new docuseries. You can make or break it, 11–time World Surf League World Champion surfer Kelly Slater He discusses how he first tried surfing in one of the island’s most iconic spots, Pipeline. 

Pipeline can be found on Oahu’s North Shore. It is well-known for its intense waves, great surf conditions and notoriously strong winds. Slater cautions that it is not suitable for everyone. 

Slater says that Pipeline is a legend to her as a youngster. “There was a picture on my wall that I saw of Pipeline, and I recall looking at it. It made me think that I didn’t understand how men could catch the wave. That’s scary!”

Slater’s first surfed the waves at 12-years-old. He recalls, “I can remember that wave picking me up and smashing me against the reef with my surfboard.” “For a moment, I felt like I would never get up. It’s going to stay here forever.

Slater explained, “That’s surfing.” The fear and the danger associated with surfing is also appealing.
