20. The Classic “Perfect Date” Line Has Special Significance

Every year on April 25, memes pop up to celebrate the film’s beloved quote from Miss Rhode Island about the “perfect date,” which she mistakenly interprets as her favorite day on the calendar rather than her ideal romantic outing. It turns out that Marc Lawrence, the screenwriter, wrote this line. Donald, however, changed the date to celebrate his wife’s birthday.

“I said that I thought it might be April 25, but the director didn’t know what to do. “That’s my wife’s birthday,” the director said. “So, I am very happy that every year on her birthday there are so many memes.”

Donald claimed that he added extra scenes to his first films in order to surprise audiences. So critics aren’t invited. The director did not forget film bloggers. Harry Knowles snuck into a test screening and “gave it the most scathing, worst review of any movie ever, including calling me out for having personally ruined Sandy Bullock’s career.”

The studio seemed unperturbed by early negative reviews and the movie ended up grossing $212,000,000 worldwide, with a $45 million budget. Donald commented, “The best thing I can tell you is that it was a big success. It’s a comedy classic, making big money, which allows me to kind of flip my finger at the review and think, ‘Heh. Heh!
