HBO will be televising The People’s Princess’s rise and fall.

Public life in Princess Diana—from her ill-fated marriage to Prince Charles to her shocking death at the age of 36 in 1997—is chronicled in the upcoming HBO documentary The Princess, premiering Aug. 13.

This trailer opens with footage taken from Diana’s 1981 engagement interview. Charles recalls Diana’s attractiveness as a 16-year old when he speaks about her in the trailer.

Diana’s fame, as well as her intense popularity, is shown in archival clips and footage.

This adulation led to jealousy, according to one reporter. “The prince knows he is second.”

Diana’s complicated relationship with the media forms the focus of the documentary. The film examines the consequences for those who once loved Diana to become hostile towards her.
