Karine Jean Pierre is making history as the first Black woman and openly gay person to serve as the White House Press Secretary.

President Joe Biden announced Jean-Pierre’s appointment on May 5 in a White House statement. She will replace the current Press Secretary and Assistant to the President Jen PsakiJean-Pierre has served in this role since November 2020. Jean-Pierre is currently the principal deputy press secretary. 

Biden stated that Karine not only has the talent, experience and integrity to do this challenging job but also will lead the communication efforts about the Biden-Harris administration on behalf of American citizens. Karine has been a friend and colleague of mine for many years. I know her well and will continue to be supportive.

Axios reports that Psaki will soon be joining MSNBC’s on-air team. She will retire as Press Secretary on May 13, according to Axios.
