After the news broke about James Madison University’s passing, the softball world was informed several days later. Lauren BernettIt has been determined that the cause of death is.
According to the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke, Va., the athlete, 20, died by suicide.
James Madison University made Bernett’s demise public in a letter sent by its president to the JMU community Jonathan AlgerDirector of Athletics Jeff Bourne, who expressed how their “hearts are aching” after hearing the news. Posted to JMU’s sports site on April 26, it described Bernett as a sophomore who was a “high-achieving player of our softball program and is a great ambassador for JMU athletics.” Bernett was also named in the letter as a “key player” on JMU’s 2020 Women’s College World Series team (the Dukes), and a freshman catcher.
It continued, “College Athletics is great because we get to interact everyday.” Our family is close. Lauren was a part of the JMU Athletics family and we are thankful that she will be remembered as a Duke. “We will all miss Lauren.”
