House of the Dragon will inevitably look very similar to Game of ThronesHowever, don’t be surprised to find less sex than the predecessor.
HBO has been particularly mindful of how the prequel series depicts sexual violence. Game of Thrones was rightfully criticized for its handling of such scenes. HBO’s Chief Content Office said that “Shows were a product their time.” Casey Bloys Telled The Hollywood Reporter, “and there’s a lot more awareness now about what we’re portraying why—and who’s having the conversations about it.”
As such, showrunners Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan CondalThe task was to balance the reality of living in patriarchal societies and limit the amount of sexual violence. They decided to cut back on the sex scenes. However, Sapochnik said, “You cannot ignore the violence perpetrated by men at that time on women.” This shouldn’t go unnoticed or glorified.
Sapochnik and Condal were equally considerate about portraying childbirth, with the former noting that they wanted to show the “violence” of delivering a baby in Medieval times, which is the era that serves as inspiration for the fantasy series.
