It was a night of MTV milestones.
Numerous artists made history at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards held at Newark’s Prudential Center on Aug. 28.
Recipient of the Best Latin Award Anitta became the first Brazilian artist in history to win an award at the VMAs. In her emotional acceptance speech, the “Envolver” singer said she wasn’t expecting the honor before reflecting on the significance of the moment.
She told the crowd, “I just wanted to say, for anyone not knowing this, tonight the history, Brazil’s first time here,” shortly after she performed. It’s the first award my country has received like this, so I wanted to thank my family as well as my friends.
The 29-year-old continued, “And tonight I performed here a rhythm that for many years in my country was considered a crime. It was in Brazil’s ghetto that I was raised, so it is not surprising that this happened to me. We are so grateful.
