“This is a great opportunity for me to start again and compete in three events in 2022,” Gus, who won a silver medal in men’s slopestyle for the United States in 2014, said in previous a statement announcing his move to Team Great Britain. I have strong connections to the UK, and have been in close contact with many athletes. This is an amazing opportunity for me to be part of a top-class team. I am confident that we can deliver outstanding results.”
The Essex-born athlete continued, “I am also doing this for my mother who was born and lived in the UK for much of her life, she has always been my greatest supporter throughout my career. My mother taught me skiing when I was 3 years old. She is also the reason that I am competing today. It’s great to now be representing GB—a country which means so much to me and my family.”
Gus made his last appearance at The X Games. In a Zoom conference, Gus stated that it was not possible to skip the contest due to COVID-19 concerns.
This is the last time I will be doing this. Gus stated, “X Games is as important as the Olympics.” The Aspen Times. I think it was hard for some athletes who decided not to go this year. I do not believe any of these decisions were made lightly. They did. But, for some reason or another, they weren’t willing to take the risk, injury, COVID, or any other.
