
Petito’s tale received huge attention but it sparked a discussion about the stories that get the most media coverage and those that aren’t. This included the crimes against women of color or transgender women.
Lifetime claims they’re working on “a number of movies about violence against women that may not have received the same media attention like Gabby Petito”, including stories such as Carlesha Freeland Gaither, Adriane Fields, Beatrice Weston.
Freeland Gaither, a Black woman was kidnapped and then later discovered in 2014. Fields was a Black woman who had been raped at the hands of the Bathtub Killer. Dale Scheanette in 1999 and Weston is a Black woman who survived Philadelphia’s Basement of Horrors in 2011.
