We react to season 2’s fashion and makeup The Great? Huzzah!

Hulu’s sophomore season has a lavish, extravagant second season. Elle FanningRussia and Peter are overthrown by Catherine’s pregnancy (Nicholas Hoult() is ready to assume the role as stay-at home dad for their unborn child, Paul. Costume designer was chosen to reflect characters’ shifting dynamics. Sharon Long and hair-and-makeup artist Louise Coles made some changes to almost all the characters’ appearances.

For Catherine, Long decided to do away with the docile and dainty look of season one, replacing it with “powerful, stronger” patterns and adding a “little bit more” jewelry.

Coles participated in this process. Elle and Long worked together, as well as Elle’s hairdresser. Lorraine Glynn, to ensure that Catherine looked every bit like the “woman in charge.” They decided together to style Catherine’s hair to be “a little more intricate and stricter than the period.”

Elle’s makeup, applied by makeup artist Erin Ayanian, was kept to a minimum, because, according to Coles, it was all about giving the expectant empress “glowing skin.”
