Interview with the President, May 12, 2012. Entertainment WeeklyDirector Baz Luhrmann shared how a phone call from the Macbeth’s Tragedy actor helped Austin Butler snag the role of Elvis Presley in his upcoming film Elvis.
“I received this videotape of this young man in a flood of tears playing ‘Unchained Melody,’ and I thought, ‘Wow, what is that? I don’t know how that could be happening. Baz said. “Then, I got a telephone call from Denzel Washington. Denzel gave me an automated cold call. Denzel Washington was unfamiliar to me. And he said, ‘I’ve just worked with this guy on stage. “I’ve never witnessed a more work-oriented person.”
Denzel spoke with Denzel and told him that he needed to visit Austin in person. He said, “Honestly, he was through the ringer but he actually lived Elvis.” EW. He’s not able to imitate Elvis. Instead, he has made Elvis a human being.
